An Easter Message from the President in Trouble Times

The fruit of the Spirit is...joy. - Galatians 5:22

Be A Joy-carrier!

Most of us are far too serious for our own good. We're uptight about everything: being five minutes late, getting stuck in traffic, waiting in line, somebody giving us a wrong look, overcooking a meal, gaining a pound, discovering a wrinkle, making an honest mistake; you name it - we lose all perspective! The problem is, we have unrealistic (and unscriptural) expectations. God didn't say He'd take us out of our troubles; He said He'd bring us through them and make us stronger. If you want to experience the joy Jesus promised, do two things: (1) Admit that your uptightness is largely because of the way you've decided life should be. (2) Understand that your expectations are causing most of your frustrations. If you keep expecting things to be a certain way and they aren't, you'll always be upset. Here's an idea: try approaching each day without all those expectations. For example, don't require everybody to be friendly; then when some are you'll be delighted. Don't expect your day to be trouble-free; instead when problems come, say: "Thank you Lord for a chance to grow in grace." Do it, and you'll see how much better everything is. Rather than fighting against life you'll be flowing with it. And pretty soon, if you work at it, you'll enjoy your life more - and other people will enjoy being around you much more too! That's why Paul wrote, "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you" (1 Th 5:16-18 NRS).

March 2006

This is the month we celebrate "Women's History Month" and in honor of every woman I know and in memory of one of my favorite down to earth writers Erma Bombeck, I'd like to use this beautiful message written by Ms Bombeck on her death bed, not only to honor her memory and every woman I know, but in the hope we all learn something from it.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do and have a wonderful month - Celebrate your womanhood by helping people with cancer and the American Cancer Society. I Do.

Friends make the world go round!IF I HAD MY LIFE TO LIVE OVER - by Erma Bombeck
(written after she found out she was dying from cancer)

I would have gone to bed when I was sick instead of pretending the earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren't there for the day.
I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose before it melted in storage.
I would have talked less and listened more.
I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained, or the sofa faded.
I would have eaten the popcorn in the 'good' living room and worried much less about the dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the fireplace.
I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather ramble about his youth.
I would have shared more of the responsibility carried by my husband.
I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed.
I would have sat on the lawn with my new clothes and not worried about grass stains.
I would have cried and laughed less while watching television and more while watching life.
I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn't show soil, or was guaranteed to last a lifetime.
Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, I'd have cherished every moment and realized that the wonderment growing inside me was the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle.
When my kids kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, "Later. Now go get washed up for dinner."
There would have been more "I love you." More "I'm sorry."
But mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute... look at it and really see it . Live it and never give it back.
Stop sweating the small stuff.
Don't worry about who doesn't like you, who has more, or who's doing what.
Instead, let's cherish the relationships we have with those who do love us.
Let's think about what we are doing each day to promote ourselves mentally, physically, emotionally.

“Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds” Albert Einstein.Cherub

What's Love Got To Do With It... ?

February is Valentine's month. This is the month to celebrate Eros, the Greek god of love, son of Aphrodite, identified by the Romans with Cupid and celebrated in most parts of the World. To all of you a big Happy Valentine Day! Therefore, this is a month that we should reflect upon our lives and the love we feel for others, not only in our private life, but also, in our public one.

We must continue working with dedication, honoring our selfless oath with a big smile on our face and with pride and joy in our hearts. It is an honor to be able to serve and to care for our community is a privilege, no matter how bumpy the road is - and I know it first hand, it can be very bumpy.

Lions are constantly improving as they are a highly capable group of people with the privilege of been of service to others. As a president of one of the most active Club's in the District, as a Zone Chair and Public Relations Chair I have encountered many challenges. However, I  must  say there are times when success at all levels is often ignored, belittled or not sufficient and to quote B. Spann "Every misstep magnified or criticized".  However, "critics are of little consequence, as there is no easier job, nor one that adds less value to society than that of being a critic". And this is not to say in any way that we should not learn from our mistakes.

As a president of a Club I organize social functions to obtain funds for our Lionistic causes. Yes! I said social events, as these events are the antidote of no funds, or the comprehensive approach to solving the Club's need for funds to donate at the Cabinet Meetings. Also, this is another form of giving back to our community.

Candy heartAs a president or not, I am a very hard working individual and I happen to preside over a Club that has a hard working record too. Let's be aware that people communicate through a variety of media and socialization or socializing, from the word society is one of them. This is a characteristic that powerfully defines American Society, this not only advances leadership, but is also the intangible but recognizable back bone of securing funds for so many institutions through out the world, as their prosperity relies on social fund–raising events.

To honor the word society and the meaning, we are a group of people belonging to the human race joined together for a common purpose, interest or goal in relation to each other. Therefore, as social beings liking company with a positive social definition and behavior in a well organized community. Our functions have been a combination of community outreach and public relations. Just what our International President Ashok Mehta requested of all Clubs. My agenda has been tailored to his request. And  detrimental  comments, especially for those not working at all, or not as hard, will never deter me from the pursuit of success.

To quote the American essayist and poet Ralph Waldo Emerson: "To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of friends; To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether a garden patch, a healthy child, or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived, this is to have succeeded!.

I wish all of you great success in your lives and in everything you do and remember that: Happiness is not a destination, it is a journey; Happiness is not tomorrow, it is now.  Happiness is not a dependency, it is a decision. May Eros or Cupid always touch your heart, as love has a lot to do with it!

January 2006

The Miami Buena Vista has an impressive record of achievements in several fields. When I became president I was not only ready for the challenge but also ready to embark on my own journey and take the first step towards my leadership, ready to reach out to the community and to work in partnership in a variety of programs. As president of the Club I have been charged the unique responsibility of securing funds for the causes we foster, therefore I created my own working agenda.

Woman of the Year is a prestigious acknowledgment that has been awarded by the Club to women of impressive accomplishments that exemplifies their role in public and private institutions and most of all enhancing the quality of life of our most vulnerable citizens by showing responsiveness to their particular needs. This ceremony is symbolic of woman’s continued pursuit of excellence, honoring their role in the society. These women were also honored with the creative tribute and contribution of the artist of the Miami Buena Vista Gallery.

On January 15th 2006 the Buena Vista celebrated success again by honoring three women of our South Florida Community for their significant and exemplary contribution through the years. Honored women must be role models in their contribution to mankind. It was a lovely afternoon to greet fellow Lions, colleagues, family and friends that one hasn’t seen in ages to be serenaded by the sound of two fantastic musicians with a wonderfully funny Master of Ceremony against the backdrop of laughter, human colloquium an excellent continental cuisine, washed down by the Bacardi open bar.

A great deal of excitement surrounded the event by having Senator Javier Souto, County Commissioner as Buena Vista’s guest. However, behind this lovely “social afternoon there were many hard working days of total dedication of this great Club. The purpose of this beautiful gathering was to honor hard working women at the service of society and to acquire needed funds to continue helping the most vulnerable people of our community and the different projects sponsored by Lions.

We hope everyone gleaned something valuable from this experience and to those that helped make this event the success that it was are to be commended for realizing the Vision and Mission of this great institution. Thank You!!

CHRISTMAS 2005

A visit : As told by Santa Claus

This is how it happened... I just finished my chores and was preparing to go to bed, when I heard a noise in the garden. My husband Giorgos opened the door to the front yard and to our surprise, Santa Claus himself stepped from behind our Christmas tree.

He placed his finger over his mouth so we could not cry out!!

We welcome him into our home and asked of the purpose and privilege of his visit and he answered with a simple statement: "Tell your friends".

And with one quick movement brought forth a miniature toy bag from behind our living room Christmas tree as Giorgos and I stood bewildered. Santa said: "Maribel and Giorgos, this is the old meaning of Christmas. The meaning that many has forgotten. This is his message".

*Santa then reached in his magic bag and pulled out a FIR TREE and placed it before a mantle saying: "The pure green color of the stately fir tree remains green all year round, depicting the everlasting hope of mankind, all the needless point heavenward, making it a symbol of man’s thoughts turning toward heaven".

*Santa again reached into his bag and pulled out a BRILLIANT STAR and placed it in my lap saying: the star was the heavenly sign of promises long ego. God promised a Savior for the world, the star is the sign of fulfillment of His promise.

*Santa once more reached into that magic bag of his and pulled out a CANDLE saying: "The candle symbolizes that Christ is the light of the World, and when we see this great light we are reminded of He who displaces the darkness".

*Santa now took from his bag a WREATH and placed it on our front door: "Giorgos and Maribel tell your friends that the wreath symbolizes the real nature of love. Real love never ceases. Love is eternal and one continuous round of affection".

*Santa then pulled a picture of himself saying: "SANTA CLAUS symbolizes the generosity and good will we feel during the month of December".

*Santa then brought out the HOLLY LEAF. This holly plant represents immortality. It also represents the crown of thorns worn by our Savior. The red holly represents the blood shed by Christ.

*Santa next pulled from this never end bag filled with gifts a GIFT and said:

God so loved the world that He gave His begotten Son…. “We must thank the Lord for his unspeakable gift. The wise men bowed before the Holly Baby and presented Him with gold, frankincense and myrrh. We should always give gifts in the same spirit of the wise men.

*Santa this time pulled out a CANDY CANE and hung it in our tree saying: "The candy represents the shepherds" crook. The crook on the staff helps to bring back strayed sheep to the flock. The candy cane is the symbol that we are our brother’s keeper".

Suddenly we heard a soft twinkling sound, and from his bag Santa pulled out a BELL and said: "As the lost sheep are found by the sound of the bell, it should ring to mankind to the fold. The bell symbolizes guidance and return".

It was the Angels that heralded in the glorious news of the Savior’s birth. The Angels sang “Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace and good will toward men”.

*Santa looked at us pleased with a twinkle in his eyes, saying: HO! HO! HO!, Merry Christmas to all!

The Miami Buena Vista Lions wish everyone a safe and Happy Christmas, filled with joy, peace, good health, prosperity and a wonderful year of service. May the true spirit of Christmas that is Love, be with you always.

To All Clubs of District 35-A - Please Join the Lions International logo ID Campaign

Lions International logo'Wear your Pin with Lion's Pride'

Always wear your club's pin with Lion's Pride

Show all those around you who's at their side,

Let everyone know all the good that we do

And how they can be part of the Lions club too.

                                                Cassandra Campbell

Over the past several weeks, as President of the Miami Buena Vista, I have been developing ideas to increase membership and identifying best business practices in Public Relations. Also, it happens to be that I am the Public Relation Chair of the District and our Governor is very keen on this subject. I would like to call upon all Clubs to join and support the Lions Identification Campaign.

This is very simple and for a few or for many of you nothing new, as I see the Governor

and Past District Governors always proudly wearing their Lions Pin. However, this is not a practice that I see with all Lions outside our Lionistic activities.

We are asking that everyone please participate in this drive of using the pin at all times and be a part of this most worthwhile endeavor, as this is an attainable goal. Let every one known that you are a Lion and for those few that may not know what Lions International is, then use this opportunity and take a few minutes of your time to explain what Lionism is all about.

Remember: promoting our service to the community and to the general public will increase knowledge of our organization, therefore, by educating others in the privilege of being of service we will not only acquire recognition, but membership will look attractive and by consequence will increase.

It is crucial to reach out to our community for more support for our causes, it is important that our public relations is effective because as a result we will be perceived as the first class Institution that we are and our leaders and constituents will exercise their responsibility.

This Institution is extremely fortunate to have so many talented and dedicated members. I am positive and very optimistic that your feedback and efforts will provide the information needed to build upon our strengths to acquire membership and to have a very successful Public Relation Campaign.

We are an Institution with a Vision and a Mission; “We Serve”

Public Relations is a very important issue of modern times. Therefore, I take this opportunity to introduce myself and to thank all of you for the privilege of allowing me to serve as the 2005-2006 Public Relations Chairman for District 35-A.

I encourage all of you and in particular all the Club Presidents to participate and take the lead with your members in this very important campaign to promote Lionism.

Our International President Ashok Mehta acknowledges 'Passion to Promote' in order to inform the general public about the Lions mission. Our governor Mario Echevarria is very keen, in outreaching to the community and promoting all of our Lionistic causes and activities.

Public Relations will create awareness and interest in our organization and, as a consequence, there will be growth in membership and funds will increase.

I am looking forward to hearing from all of you as soon as possible on your Public Relations efforts and activities and I ask for your support and your Club's cooperation in this very interesting project.

I thank all of you for your time, concern and involvement throughout the year in the area of Public Relations.

" Life Lessons"

Life gives you lessons every day and from our daily living we not only learn, but we also grow. As a young woman I was very interested in Yoga, Ghandi and the Orientalistics which I found of great interest and very altruistic. For me, as for many people, this was and still is more a Philosophy than a religion. Now than my eldest daughter Alanna Horsley is in her mother's old path I have renewed my interest and I have gone back to Buddish readings and to the teachings of the great Chinese philosopher Confucius. I hope the following passage captures your interest, as it brings great inner peace and a peaceful outlook on life. You can access further readings at www.dailyom.com.

"While we may not recognize it at the time, every challenge we face is ultimately an opportunity to bring more love and higher consciousness into our lives. The obstacles we encounter every day - whether great trials or minor bumps in the road - provide us an opportunity to learn and to grow. By placing obstacles in our path, the universe focuses our attention on life lessons that, on a deeper level, we wish to comprehend more fully. If we choose to, we can view any disharmony in our daily lives as an invitation to shed an old belief or behaviour pattern in favor of a more enlightened one.

The challenge is to recognize the lesson being offered by a given situation. Often we learn about a positive quality by experiencing its opposite. An impulse toward anger may teach us about love or acceptance. A sense of constraint may teach us about freedom. A situation that appears beyond our control may prompt us to discover our own role in its creation. The lessons presented to us may encourage us to develop soul qualities such as humility, patience, or forgiveness.

Sometimes we are too involved in our present difficulty to find that higher perspective is more easily recognized in hindsight. Yet this doesn't mean we are without the tools to deal with it. Regardless of the size and nature of your difficulty, an attitude of love and gratitude will move you through it more easily and bring resolution more quickly. When difficulties arise, hold a loving thought for yourself and for whoever else is involved. Challenge yourself to find something in the situation to be grateful for, no matter how small, and thank the universe for it. This shift in attitude will shift the situation and your perspective, and it will bring you closer to that deeper understanding your soul is seeking on your behalf. Life lessons don't always come packaged the way we expect them to, and it is sometimes these lessons that ultimately bring us the greatest joy."

Sincerely United in Lionism,

As ever, Maribel C. Spiropoulos

August 2005

July 17th, 2005 was the Installation of Officers and my second term as Miami Buena Vista president. It was with great success, not only for the beauty of the Sunday luncheon but for all the meritorious awards given to the members of the Club for their hard work and dedication to Lionistic causes, honoring the motto “WE SERVE” and the Club served well in the period 2004-2005. As the 2005-2006 International President Ashok Mehta's motto is “Passion to Excel”, the Buena Vista serves with passion, therefore excels.

I would like to take this opportunity to said thank you to everyone that made this success possible, members of the Board of Directors and Club members, all Lions of the District that attended our functions, community members, family, friends and our sponsors, without whom the task of being successful would be impossible. This was “Team Work”.

We share the successful privilege of been of “Service” with all of you. Thanks again.

The Buena Vista was honored this year for their hard work and contribution and was the winner of the First Prize in the Most Active Club Contest.

As we approach a new Lionistic year, I assume my responsibilities with dedication and great joy and, to the best of my ability, I will walk that extra mile for our causes and I hope, with the support and cooperation of my fellow Lions and the Board of Directors, that this will be another excellent year for our beloved Club.

The core of Lionism is our more dedicated outstanding individuals called Lions, they are the most valuable asset of this great institution and all the achievements obtained world wide emphasize this very important point.

These Lions must reflect the highest level of dedication, conscientiousness, compassion, customer service and the passion to excel and these Lions, in teams or individually, must always be “The Best of the Best”.

This year let the Roar of Lions be heard in every corner of the Earth by helping the most vulnerable of our society, lets bring a ray of light where there is darkness.

This year again The Buena Vista will work together in harmony and friendship.

Tom Hopkins'

Rules for a Perfect Day

Just for today...

I will try to live and delight in the reality of being alive. My past is forever gone, my future an uncertainty, so I will be happy and thankful for each moment.

I will not allow negative input into my mind...happiness is a choice and I choose to be happy.

I will be thankful to God for my health, my loved ones, my business, and my country. I will also be thankful for any pain in crisis that helps me grow because God has said, be thankful in all things.

I will take care of my body, realizing the importance of the words moderation and balance, knowing that as I bring my flesh under control, how much easier it will be to control my will and my actions.

I will treat everyone I meet today the way I would like to be treated. I will strive to have them like themselves better when they’re with me.

I will avoid gossip, jealousy, and negative thinking. Most people don’t think about what they think about. Today, I will make a conscious effort to hold loving and beautiful thoughts in my mind.

I will write down my priorities; thinking of my loved ones and my responsibilities. I may not get everything done, but I will do the most productive thing possible at every given moment.

I will strive to humble myself before others, controlling my ego and making other people feel important.

I will spend time in study, learning how to better serve my fellowman. I know my growth in all areas is in direct proportion to the service I give to others.

I will not take rejection personally. I am first and foremost in the people business and, thus, realize they can only reject my proposal and not me. I will keep on keepin’ on.

I will spend time in prayer, asking God to let others see the light of His shining love through me.

June 2005
For the month of June instead of a letter I decided to use this touching poem by an anonymous writer as my message, because I find this poem full of wisdom, kindness, compassion and teaches a very good lesson. Remember how blessed we all are and that we can be the person sitting at the other side of the desk. We must count our blessings.

The Other Side Of The Desk

Have you ever though just a wee little bit

Of how it would seem to be a misfit.

And how you would feel if YOU had to sit,

On The Other Side of The Desk?

Have you ever looked at the man who seemed a bum,

As he sat before you, nervous... dumb...

And thought of the courage it took to come,

To The Other Side of The Desk?

Have you thought of his dreams that went astray.

Of the hard, real facts of his every day,

Of the things in his life that make him stay,

On the Other Side of The Desk?

Did you make him feel he was full of greed,

Make him ashamed of his race or creed,

Or did you reach out to him in his need,

To the Other Side of The Desk?

May God give us wisdom and lots of it,

And such compassion and plenty of grit,

So that we may be kinder to those who sit,

On The Other Side of The Desk.

April 2005
Being a Lion is a fulfilling and rewarding part of life. We all must try to spark interest in others to consider being a member of this great institution. There has been a campaign to attract more women into Lionism, as women prove to be great volunteers, excellent leaders and fantastic innovators.

Lions Clubs are one of the largest and more active world organization and together, are able to accomplish as there are more than 1.352,799 members in 193 countries.

The Club was founded in 1917 and since then, women have always played a very important part in this great organization dedicate “To Serve”. However, until 1987 women were not admitted to full membership in Lions Club International and since then we have excelled in all roles and positions, from President to Governor. Women in all institutions around the world bring in depth, involvement and strong dedicated leadership.

Lions Club recognizes the importance of women to enhance the movement and at the same time members have the opportunity to broaden their horizons and fulfil many goals and by having the privilege to serve others through service. Projects provide a great deal of satisfaction. This April our beloved Club celebrates 35 years of success and wonderful service of giving back to our community at the local and international level. This are some of the blessings we as members share.

As Lions there are many life lessons to be learn.

Celebrate life by becoming a Lion. Together, we can make the impossible possible and make a difference of a life time, we already know the joy of making a difference and we all cherish fellowship. Get involved !!!

As ever, yours in Lionism,

March 2005

February has gone, the month of the Valentine celebration, Love was in the air and we missed the letter during that month . My apologies to you all.

However, in March I am happy to inform that The Buena Vista has worked all these months on several projects with love, dedication and with effective communication that is essential for strong team work.

After months of planning and preparation almost all the projects of the Club under my presidency has been completed and I must say with great success. We are all very happy, as events are an integral part of our ways to collect funds to assist the Club causes. We have a unified mission and our efforts are completely aligned in order to provide uniquely tailored services. As Lions build first class care for the people we serve, our community deserves the best and only the very best, Every Lion is committed to that outcome.

Making our events a success was no small challenge, given our projects size scope and innovative initiatives that at times stretch far beyond, however, due to the Buena Vista abilities and passion, it was a lot of fun. We are also tremendously excited by the potential of The Miami Buena

Vista Art Gallery and the community response. The gallery allows us to broaden our reach interact with others and share experiences and knowledge with great learning objectives. This has been an unique enthusiastic experience. I must say: first we connected with the heart of our sponsor before asking for a helping hand.

We thank everyone for their cooperation and support during these past two months in holding several important events and also, Lions participation in non Lionistic events. We are proud of the job well done. Lions concept is giving back to their community through service and at the Buena Vista, "WE SERVE" your tenaciousness is admirable.

Thank you again and until next month

Sincerely united in Lionism,

Wishing you all a very Happy Valentines!

Yours in Lionism,

Maribel C. Spiropoulos, President

January 2005

The Miami Buena Vista Lions wish you and yours a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year filled with Joy and the capacity to serve. As we complete one year and begin the next, we find ourselves at the center and certainly facing a most challenging and rewarding time as Lions and citizens of a great community.

We have the magnificent opportunity to change our own world and the world of those around us through dedication and service. Lions’ work and aspirations for the New Year are all about bringing empathy, help and compassion to communities around the world. We are blessed with the ultimate gift that is called responsibility, to our community and others, and the results I must say are remarkably positive.

Small acts of kindness not only brighten, but change the world. Remember, it takes a very strong person to have a tender heart. As Gandhi said “We must be the change we wish to see in the world and others”. It is up to us.

We had a wonderful year in 2004. The Buena Vista Lions have an extraordinary enthusiasm, unwavering commitment, faith in our principles and firmly dedicated to the highest service to others. We work together in firm cooperation and we busy ourselves working on our next set of long range projects and future objectives of our club. What a fantastic year this was!!

However…, we are deeply saddened by the tragedy of the passing of our Governor Colleen Westmoreland; there are no words to express the sorrow of Lions of the District, family and friends. The service was beautifully moving and the Lions cooperation and work was magnificent. The brotherhood and shared love was impressive, an unforgettable moment that all of us who attended will cherish for a very long time. It was a very sad occasion that brought all of us together, reflecting upon the life of a lovely woman, who was a Lion, a mother, a friend. I think much good always comes from sad moments which give us the opportunity to reflect upon our life and, as I am writing this, I cannot stop thinking about George Carlin’s message and I want to share it with you: “The paradox of our time is that we’ve learned how to make a better living, but not always a better life, we have added years to life, but not life to years, we have conquered outer space, but some of us have failed to conquer inner space. We must not think always on larger things but better things, let’s plan less and accomplish more, spend more time with your loved ones. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it come from deep inside you, say I love you more often to your partner and your loved one, give a warm hug to the one next to you, because it’s the only treasure you can give with your heart. Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment, for someday that person will not be there again. Give time to love, give time to speak and give time to share precious thoughts in your mind”. And as Carlin said so well: “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that life takes our breath away”.

For the year 2005 I’d like my message to be: Lets sweat less over the small stuff, lets seize every minute of life, love more, forgive more, say more I love you’s, more I am sorry’s, more thank you’s, more smiles. Lets think about all the blessings we now have, let’s cherish relationship with others, be more patient, remember this is our only opportunity and chance at life, this is not a rehearsal. Therefore, now is our opportunity to stand against injustice when you see it, rise up and be a loud voice. When the other side seems irredeemable, uncover what we all have in common, we all have common ground, beneath all the misconception and stereotypes. Every day brings new opportunities to turn civility into action, let us as Lions always hold the door open for a better future and be, as we have always been, firmly committed to the highest personal behavior. Don’t waste precious moments. Enjoy life as it is meant to be. May you all have a wonderful spiritual journey this year, with many happy returns.

December 2004

Christmas time is here again! The most beautiful season of the year! A time of beauty, love, peace and joy and a time to reflect upon our lives. Also, a time to say thank you for the privilege we all share that is to be of service to our fellow men. Even though thank you, at times, seems like a wholly inadequate word for all our blessings, however, is profoundly heartfelt.

I am in awe of what we all been able to accomplish in such few short months, I am aware it requires time away from families and friends, but I sincerely hope the small or big sacrifices we all made this past year reaches the goal for which it was intended. We have exciting work ahead and our first challenge is helping the blind, the commitment is enormous, but the Buena Vista will continue to count on the dedication, talent, professionalism and leadership skills of their

members, together with the willingness to help, as we have a unique committed group of lions whose dedication is admirable. Trustworthy individuals, the finest among the finest!

This is also the perfect time of the year to work in building better relationships. It is critical to build good relationship skills, when you invest in it you are building a network to provide encouragement, inspiration and support and you are also avoiding one of humanity's oldest states: Loneliness. We must see the members of the club individually, we can not take a cookie cutter

approach, not in this age of globalization and modernization. We must realize that the people we deal with in our sphere are unique beings, with their own personalities, needs, shortcomings and everyone with their own talent willing to contribute and this is the very essence of this institution: Contribution. The Lions Club is a team effort and we must find what motivates each one of us to be able to incorporate that into the need of our Club versus our community.

This year the club has had numerous achievement to its credit and has done very fine work, as in every holiday season the mood is festive. I wanted to once again thank you all who assisted in our

projects and that I had the opportunity to work along side all of these incredible individuals that we call Lions. Thanks for your dedication and commitment, you‘re simply the best, better than all the rest, better than anyone, anyone I’ve ever met!!!

May the peace and blessings of the holiday season be yours. Love, hope, joy, may these be your gifts this Christmas. I appreciate your support during this year and I thank God for the privilege of serving. Best wishes for a happy, healthy and safe holiday with many happy returns to you and yours. ENJOY IT!!!!

November 2004

The core of Lionism is our outstanding, committed and hard working members, especially those sitting on the Board of Directors. I am proud of your efforts and honored to work among the finest lions of my Club: The Miami Buena Vista. We are getting the job done!!!

Our Club has had wonderful Presidents and all good leaders and I want to say that when a leader has the opportunity to serve on a team in a non-leading role, the experience can be challenging, to say the least. After all, when you are used to being in charge, it can be difficult to sit back and let someone else run the show. However, we must learn that leading and following are not mutually exclusive and both are extremely important on the management and development of any great institution, (according to Stever Robbins, a leadership consultant for Harvard Business school).

Therefore, I am grateful for the afforded cooperation of the Club during the past few months, that has allowed me to develop and grow in my own role of president. Leaders are redefined constantly. We must help others to develop their talents, foster learning, create environments for growth and success, so that we all can achieve our goals.

Change is something that we should all embrace. Change drive forward the Club and brings about innovation and opportunities. On innovation: the Club now has a Website, an Art Gallery and is working hard outreaching to the community, working in partnership with neighborhood activities and is active in public relations. Through our efforts we give voice to the Lions in our local communities.

We find ourselves in the middle of one of the most rewarding and challenging times, by being a Lion we change our own world and the world of those around us and, due to the dedication of so many fellow Lions, an ever increasing number of people are receiving a greater range of services and benefits.

Like all of you I am proud to be a part of this great institution, but we must be aware of the challenges facing us. It worries me not to see young people in Lionism, we must educate our young on the importance of service and we must make a difference!! I think this quote say it all: “In a complex world of constant change, where knowledge is obsolete every few years, education can no longer be something that one acquires during youth to serve for an entire lifetime. Rather, education must focus on instilling the ability to continue learning throughout life”.

As Lions we have this great opportunity. And I will continue with a quote of one of my top boss, Glenn Broch, when he said that he is convinced, and so am I, that leaders can and should made a positive difference as they are risk-takers, visionary, compassionate taskmasters, servants and courageous and outspoken champions, leadership is not for the timid and fainthearted, is not for the passive, is not for the uncommitted. It is for people that have the boldness of a LION and the willingness to utter the ROAR that is inside all of us. And as the Buena Vista President, I want to listen to the ROAR of the Club.

I appreciate all your efforts and your willingness to care and be of service to others.

As ever, in Lionism,

October 2004

As Lions we are always moving forward and embarking on an exciting adventure to advance and help our community in the area of human opportunity and resources. We are finding ourselves in the middle of one of our most challenging and rewarding times and as Florida's population grows at an astounding rate it become more important than ever to  place emphasis on items pertaining to membership and  retention of members. We must not forget that new members are the life blood of any club. The Miami Buena Vista, with fantastic enthusiasm and unwavering commitment, has just sponsored and celebrated the inauguration of a new club of 29 members ready to serve (The Miami Honduras). We take this opportunity to congratulate Lion Bertha Garcia, founder  and guiding Lion of the new club. Congratulations to all!

However, there is still much to be done and I'd like to share my thoughts and speak forthrightly.  Now that we 've made great strides, we must replace and acquire new members, we must involve the board of directors and all members in the club work and activities. I urge you to stay focused in the magnificent opportunity and privilege of been able to serve your community. Lets not forget that positive mental attitude are shared by all Lions around the world. It never stops amazing me the fantastic work you all do day by day, year after year. The Miami Buena Vista has proven once more to be a superb hard working club, because this is what we all are, members of a working club. I have never been prouder to be on a team.

I am proud to wholeheartedly report that the club has been most productive, several members attended the Reno, Nevada convention. At local level, there was a representation at the NAAR kick off for autistic research and our fund raising events are producing positive results.

Furthermore, we are receiving a tremendous response from the community. We had a beautiful gala to honor two of our outstanding women Dr.Wilma Tunon and Dr. Grisel Ybarra, chosen for their dedication to our community. "Women of the year" was created to celebrate the work of humanitarian women that are willing and ready to walk the extra mile for those most vulnerable citizen.

I am also very pleased to inform that the arts, in all forms, are always present to enhance, with knowledge, culture and beauty, the events of our beloved Club.

We express great appreciation and gratitude to all our Gold and Silver sponsors, to the participant artists we extend our warmest thanks and to the press, that has been so gracious, our gratitude. We are blessed!!!

CONGRATULATIONS! Keep up the good work and please join me in knowing that together we can make a difference!

We can,  we will, we serve.

September 2004

I want to thank all of you for your dedication to serve, improving the lives of so many of our most vulnerable citizens and for your commitment to making all our projects a success.

As we continue to be focused on all the important goals before us, we will continue to achieve successes. The Buena Vista goals have been a roadmap to wonderful shared success over the years, thanks to dedicated club members. We are very busy working on our next long range goals for the future, and as usual  we are completely committed.

As our development progresses, thank you again for being the restless Lions you all are. Wonderful work has been done during these hot and productive Summer months. Not only have we enjoyed many fraternal evenings attending as many fellow lions clubs installations as possible, but we also have participated in the Leadership Workshop, attended the Zone Meeting and the First Cabinet Meeting among other activities.

We had a celebration of life honoring Lion Dr. Bertha Garcia on her birthday, for her dedication to lionistic service and to our Floridians. It was a fantastic event at Cafe Fantasia, filled with fun and joy, attended by fellow Lions and community entities.

We also participated in the "Coral Way Art Festival", a fantastic important event to promote art and culture in this great city. The arts were represented by more of 80 participants from all nationality and walk of life, it was a very artistic colorful event and a very enjoyable afternoon that went into the night, with radio and television coverage. We had huge crowds of Floridians and the event was attended by many fellow Lions from different clubs. The Miami Buena Vista's contribution was pivotal to the success of the event, and was recognized with a certificate of appreciation from the Mayor and Commissioner of the City of Miami.

Again, congratulations! Your contributions will stand as shining examples of service. Keep up the good work.

Yours in Lionism,

July 2004

It has been a wonderful Lionistic year under the leadership of fellow Lion Figueras. He was very successful in all his endeavors and we congratulate him and the club members that worked so hard to make his presidency the success that it was.

I am honored to preside over the prestigious Miami Buena Vista , I am lucky to have the support of the wonderful elected board, with a vice president of the caliber of Lion Vidaurreta I.C., as club secretary Lion de la Hera PDG, and Lion Gutierrez as treasurer, Lion Dr. Garcia my sponsor, that never tires to teach me when asked, no incoming president can ask for a finer cabinet, I am proud  to serve with them and the rest of the board and members of the club. Special gratitude to immediate past president Lion Figueras for his support. Last, but not least, my dearest husband for, his unconditional dedication and love.

The year ahead encounter new challenges, during the 2004 & 2005 it is crucial the need to outreach to our community for the support to Lionistic causes, it is important that our public relations be effective, because as it is result, we will be perceived as a first class institution, and our leaders and constituents will exercise their responsibility.

We must increase public awareness of club activities and let everyone known of our achievements. Our goal is like our motto: "WE SERVE", therefore,  we must serve enthusiastically and with generosity fulfilling the humanitarian causes we foster like true Lions, you all have my sincere appreciation for your efforts and dedication you all have displayed fulfilling the club goals.

I hope with God's grace and your support to continue guiding this wonderful association into the bright future that awaits us, and further inspire you to
enrich the lives of others and your very own.

Yours in Lionism,
