Dear Lions and Ladies,

I suppose you have heard the legend that represents opportunity as a capricious lady who knocks at every door but once, and if the door isn't opened quickly, she passes on, never to return. And that is how it should be, lovely desirable ladies won't wait. You have to go out and grab 'em.

I am your opportunity. I am knocking at your door. I want to be adopted. The legend doesn't say what you are to do when several beautiful opportunities present themselves at the same door. I guess you have to choose the one you love best. I hope you will adopt me. I am the youngest here, and what I have to offer you is full of splendid opportunities for service.

The American Foundation for the Blind is only four years old. It grew out of the imperative needs of the blind, and was called into existence by the sightless themselves. It is national and international in scope and in importance. It represents the best and most enlightened thought on our subject that has been reached so far. Its object is to make the lives of the blind more worthwhile everywhere by increasing their economic value and giving them the joy of normal activity.

Try to imagine how you would feel if you were suddenly stricken blind today. Picture yourself stumbling and groping at noonday as in the night, your work, independence, gone! In that dark world wouldn't you be glad if a friend took you by the hand and said "come with me and I will teach you how to do some of the things you used to do when you could see"?

You have heard how through a little word dropped from the fingers of another, a ray of light from another soul touched the darkness of my mind and I found myself, found the world, found God. It is because my teacher learned about me and broke through the dark, silent, imprisonment which held me that I am able to work for myself and for others. It is the caring we want more than money. The gift without the sympathy and interest of the giver is empty. If you care, if we can make the people of this great country care, the blind will indeed triumph over blindness!

The opportunity I bring to you, Lions, is this: To foster and sponsor the work of the American Foundation for the Blind. Will you not help me hasten the day when there shall be no preventable blindness; no little deaf, blind child untaught; no blind man or woman unaided? I appeal to you Lions, you who have your sight, your hearing, you who are strong and brave and kind.

Will you not constitute yourselves Knights of the Blind in this crusade against darkness?

Estimados Leones y damas:

Supongo que habrán escuchado la historia aquella que representa a la oportunidad como a una dama muy caprichosa, que toca en todas las puertas una sola vez, y si no abrimos la puerta rápidamente, ella sigue su camino y nunca regresa. Y así es como debe ser. Las damas hermosas y deseables no esperan. Hay que ir por ellas cuando se presenta la ocasión.

Yo soy esa oportunidad. Estoy tocando a la puerta de ustedes. Quiero ser adoptada. La citada historia no dice qué tenemos que hacer cuando se presentan varias oportunidades ante la misma puerta. Supongo que hay que escoger a la más hermosa. Espero yo sea a la que ustedes quieran adoptar. Aquí, yo soy la más joven, y lo que ofrezco viene lleno de oportunidades de servicio.

La Fundación Norteamericana del Ciego tiene apenas cuatro años de vida. Nació de las necesidades imperiosas de los ciegos, y los mismos ciegos le dimos existencia. Sus horizontes de acción y su importancia son nacionales e internacionales. En ella son representadas las mejores y más eruditas ideas sobre el tema que nos ocupa. Su finalidad es darle mayor utilidad a las vidas de todos los ciegos, aumentando su valor económico y ofreciéndoles el placer de una actividad diaria normal.

Imagínense ustedes cómo se sentirían si de repente hoy quedaran ciegos. Imagínense dando tropezones y andando a tientas, a plena luz del mediodía como si fuera noche; sus trabajos y su independencia, perdidos. En ese mundo de tinieblas, ¿no estarían ustedes contentos si algún amigo los tomara de la mano y dijera "Ven conmigo y te enseñaré cómo hacer lo que podías hacer cuando veías"? Esta es la clase de amigo que la Fundación Norteamericana del Ciego va a ser para todos los ciegos de este país, si todos los videntes le dan el respaldo que necesita.

Todos ustedes han escuchado cómo una pequeña palabra pronunciada con las señales de los dedos de las manos de otra persona, cómo un rayo de luz nacido en otra alma llegaron hasta la oscuridad de mi mente y pude hallarme a mí misma, hallar el mundo, hallar a Dios. Y ahora puedo trabajar por mí y por los demás, porque mi maestra pudo entenderme y pudo irrumpir a través de la oscuridad, la prisión del silencio en que me encontraba. Más que el dinero, queremos su atención. El regalo que no viene con el interés y la buena intención del que lo obsequia, no tiene valor. Si ustedes tienen el interés de ayudar a los ciegos, si podemos conseguir que en este país todos los demás tengan interés, sin duda alguna que el ciego triunfará sobre la oscuridad.

La oportunidad que yo les traigo, Leones, es esta: la de promover y patrocinar los fines de la Fundación Norteamericana del Ciego. ¿No me ayudarán ustedes a alcanzar el día en que ya no exista la ceguera evitable; ¿que no haya chicos sordos o ciegos, sin enseñanza; ¿que no haya ni hombre ni mujer ciegos sin recibir ayuda? Yo les suplico, Leones, a ustedes que pueden ver y oír; que son fuertes, valientes y bondadosos; ¡sean los paladines del ciego en esta cruzada contra la oscuridad!
